Preventing Repetitive Strain Injury
Working on the computer full time can cause many orthopedic problems. The main complaint is usually pain in the upper arms, in the neck, shoulders and the back. Repetitive Strain Injury, also known as RSI, or tendonitis, or upper limb disorders can within time lead to permanent damage if not taken care of. RSI occurs when the parts of the moving parts of the limbs are injured. Usually people who suffer from these sorts of injuries are computer professionals, students, musicians, and others who have to use their hands in a repetitive fashion. Working on computers full time can lead to lots of orthopedic disorders.
The beginning symptoms are constant pains in the elbow, hands, shoulders, neck and back. Some other symptoms are cramping, tingling and numbness in the hands. The individual will find their hand movements to be clumsy and will have difficulty doing things, such as fastening buttons.
The usual diagnoses are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis, Bursitis, shoulder pains and White Limb. The usual cause of these sorts of strains is due to unbroken periods of work. Lack of information about Ergonomics may lead to negligence of specific needs of the individual.
It’s always advised to seek medical attention when early symptoms set in. Some of the things to look out for are posture. It’s recommended to sit in front of the computer in a semi reclined position with the forearms resting in a cradle or an extension which holds the keyboard. There should be support on the back and the hands should point in the direction of the forearms. Your feet need to rest on the ground or on a foot stool. The distance of the monitor needs to be at least 18 inches or more and just a little lower than eye level.
Be sure to take occasional breaks from time to time. It’s also suggested to drink plenty of fluids. This helps keep the tendons and tissues soft. It may also help to learn some computer shortcuts instead of using the mouse. Don’t pound on the keyboard, touch the keyboard softly.
If you’re on the phone a lot at work, be sure not to cradle the phone between the head and shoulder while working. This may lead to neck strain. It’s also highly suggested to cut down on video games or surfing the internet at work. This may increase unnecessary stress on your hands.
Ensure that you and your employees are using quality ergonomic office furniture. This will aid in full comfort for your employees.
If you have any of these symptoms, don’t diagnose yourself. Consult a doctor.
