Tips To Improve Construction Ergonomics
Construction is a demanding job, but is a vital part of society. Construction workers handle tasks that range from heavy lifting and repetitive tasks, which place them at risks of injury.
Here are some times to improve the safety of workers on the work site.
First be sure to use tools that are considered ergonomically correct. When purchasing power tools, make sure that the vibration of the tools are mild. Be sure to find tools that are light and well balanced. The tool handle must allow you to hold it with comfort.
Avoid bending for long periods of time. Be sure to sit on a stable stool if you plan on squatting down for long durations.
If you wear a tool belt, be sure that it is balanced. In other words, make sure that one side isn’t heavier than the other site when worn. An unbalanced tool belt could lead to back pains. It makes one side of your back work harder in order to compensate. Also don’t carry more tools than what you really need. And of course, don’t wear a tool belt if there isn’t a need to. When taking breaks, be sure to remove your tool belt.
When working, don’t twist from the waist. Twisting your lower back while shoveling or lifting can cause injury. Be sure to lift your feet and turn your body when shoveling. It requires more work, but will keep the strain off of your back.
If your job involves lifting, be sure to lift safely. Test to see how heavy it is to see if you need assistance. Once you lift the object, keep it close to you. Be sure to tighten your stomach while lifting. Remember to lift with the legs and not your back. Always keep the back straight. When lower the load, do the same thing.
Try to minimize overhead projects. Lifting overhead and reaching for things causes the back to arch. Continuous strain can cause stress on the spine, joints, and muscles. Try to get as close as you can to the work load. Take breaks and stretch out the back during the breaks.
Also be sure to keep your wrists and arms in the neutral position. Be sure not to work with your wrists bent. Also be sure to avoid working with outstretched arms. If there is any form of pain, tingling, or any other signs of over doing it, give it time to rest.
